How to Meditate the YooperSmith way

Meditation is very important to me. I meditate one way or another practically everyday. To me, meditation is a very easy because I have been praticing since 2004. The good news is you can learn how to mediatate rather quickly and the more you practice, the easier it gets.

Why Meditate?

Before I tell you how I mediate, lets get the why out of the way. Here are the positives benefits that I get from meditation:

  • Relaxation

  • Stress relief

  • Peace of mind

  • Helps me refocus my attention

  • Helps keep me healthy

  • Helps me get a good night’s sleep

  • Helps me create my day

  • Helps me get what I want

  • Helps me be more happy

  • Helps remind me of “the truth” (I will get into the “the truth” in another post.)

If that list of benefits sounds interesting to you, please continue. If it doesn’t interest you, you have already stopped reading this post!

How Yooper meditates

  1. Find a quiet place where you won’t be interupted for 15 – 30 minutes.

  2. Choose a comfortable chair, bed, couch. You want to be comfy, but not so comfy that you fall asleep.

  3. Choose a position: sitting, lying down, or some sort of yoga position.

  4. Set a timer for 15-30 minutes.

  5. Close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths and try to quiet your mind, then let your breath return to normal. “Not thinking” is pratically impossible, we are going for “fewer” thoughts.

  6. Choose a word or sound that you are comfortable repeating as you exhale (such as OM, or Ahh, or one…shorter words are better.)

  7. Use your Mantra word as you exhale. You don’t need to constantly repeat your mantra, do what comes naturally.

  8. Start with being gratful for everything you are and have. Put yourself in an attitude of gratitude.

  9. Think about things that you want and how amazing your life will be when you get what you want.

  10. Turn off the timer, because it is beeping.

There you have it…you just meditated. It doesn’t matter what you think or believe, if you do this once or twice a day on a regular basis, you will enjoy the benefits above.

Thanks to Dr. Wayne Dyer, whose books taught me how to meditate. He has many greats books and audio programs out there to help you learn how to meditate. I encourage you to check those out as well as other products after you have practiced for a while. Trust me, you will be nothing but thankful if you do. Have fun!

  1. I’ll give it a try when we visit Zephyr Cove next year. The place is secluded and quiet.
Speaking of quiet, I actually hear my body’s naturally-emitting noises when I’m in a quiet place, or when my ears are covered like during an audiology test for example. This explains why I don’t do so well on audiology tests but I actually know when a TV is left on without any programming input like cable – I can “hear” the frequency it is emitting. Weird i know. Anyway, nice place you got here.

  2. Yooper,

    Very nice post!

@ Juan: Your inner sense of hearing has been enhanced. Whatever you are doing keep doing. You can actually use the inner sounds (within your body) as an aid for meditation. Just be aware of your breath and simultaneously the natural sounds you hear from within you. This is actually a profound form of meditation. Many techniques are actually designed to activate the inner sense of hearing, so that one can then meditate on the natural sounds from within. Since you already have an awakened hearing, why not use it?

    Thanks,
    Desika
